AKA Fortnight Lily, widely distributed African native with slowly spreading rhizome clumps. Blooms dramatic 2-3" white and pale lilac flower most of the year at approximately two week intervals (hence the name Fortnight Lily), among clumps of narrow, sword-like leaves up to 4' tall and broad. Foliage and blossoms grow from early spring to first frost in the fall, regrowing from ground. Sun to part shade. Low maintenance, drought resistant once well established, prefers partial or occasional shade. These plants were previously in the genus Moraea, but were reclassified because they have rhizomes, but they also reproduce from seeds and will self-seed and spread, so dead-head after blooming to avoid sprouts (and promote additional blossoms). Parts of the plant are poisonous if ingested, and handling them can irritate sensitive skin.
