Collection: Onion Family

Alliums include onions, chives, garlic, leeks, scallions, and shallots. The green leafy portion is typically called the "scapes", and is edible on all alliums, even if the plant is being grown for the bulb. Many varieties form "bulbils" at the top of a stalk to help them spread, which are also edible.

Onions are often divided into long-day and short-day categories. Short-day are excellent for Texas, since our summer and winter days are similar lengths.  Long-day onions will grow much larger bulbs up north where the summer day length can get very long, but they will grow fine in Texas and will just produce a smaller root bulb.
