Milkweed

Family Apocynaceae. Members of genus Asclepias contain cardiac glycosides in their leaves which are toxic to many animals, but act as protectants to monarch butterfly caterpillars which have evolved to eat nothing else. Unusual flowers serve as nectar sources for scores of pollinator species.
