AFRICAN BITTER LEAF --Vernonia amygdalina--
Shrubby tree from Tanzania is a great medicinal and pest repellent. Its most important compounds (found in the leaves, twigs, and roots) are steroid glycosides- type vernonioside B1 – these chemical substances possess a potent anti-parasitic, anti-tumour, and bactericidal effect. Used widely in Sub Saharan Africa to treat parasites, stomach problems, hepatitis, nausea, malaria, and fever. Chimpanzees have been known to self medicate with this in the wild! Leaves can be eaten as a vegetable stewed or raw. Can be moved into full sun once past the small sapling phase, drought tolerant once established, prefers humidity and warmth.
