Vigorous type with sturdy stalks can get up to 8 feet! Deep maroon red in all parts, with bright fuchsia bloom heads! Used for esquite (, a snack of parched, popped seeds, and these are an exciting black), to make pinole (toasted, sweetened, and spiced flour made into porridge) and atole (a sweet, flour-based beverage), and leaves like cooked spinach. Also a great ornamental, flower heads can be dried fpr arrangements! 90-100 days.
