APPLE 'Kangaroo' --Solanum aviculare--
APPLE 'Kangaroo' --Solanum aviculare--
New Zealand native called Poporo in Māori, or sometimes NZ nightshade. Shrub around 5' with pretty blooms and berries. The leaves, stems, & unripe fruit are a rich source of the glycoalkaloid solasodine, used in the synthesis of steroid contraceptives. The fully ripe fruits, after they have fallen, are said to be eaten raw, boiled or baked; if at all unripe they burn the mouth.
