Nuts are used in scrumptious treats like candies and ice cream. Outside of the kitchen, the hard shells are used commercially in cosmetics, oil well drilling and water filtration. It produces a uniquely grained wood that's highly coveted for furniture, flooring and more. Deciduous tree can grow up to 80 feet in height and is best suited for moist yet well-drained soils. The black walnut kernel is high in unsaturated fat, protein and lacks cholesterol, making it a nutritious food ingredient with a pleasing flavor and crunch. In addition to food, the black walnut can also be used in crafts, particularly when dyeing and as an ink or wood stain. Walnut hull (the green coating) was used in some of the earliest writing inks. Fast grower, makes great shade and wonderful fall color.
