Leuchtenbergia principis --Prism Cactus--
Rare, peculiar cactus! Has "tubercles" that mimic the appearance of agave leaves, and explode into hairy filaments at the tips. Makes dramatic, large yellow blooms atop the 24" growth. Often grows alone in clusters of true agave and grasses. Threatened by illegal collection and grazing, it is a protected species in Mexico (NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010). Full sun to part shade, drought tolerant (water only when soil has dried, very little if at all in winter), tolerant of light frost.
