YAM 'Chinese' --Dioscorea polystachya--
Vining plant grows throughout East Asia where it is known as "mountain medicine" and used to treat cancer, Crohn's disease, and whooping cough. It is believed to have been introduced to Japan in the 17th century or earlier. Introduced to the United States as early as the 19th century for culinary and cultural uses. Tubers are edible raw or cooked, though they benefit from vinegar-water soaking to neutralize oxalates which can be an irritant to some. Blossoms have a cinnamon scent.
