Cool Texas Native shrub to small tree, named for the way it branches at right angles, also called Stretchberry, Spring Herald, Desert Olive, Tanglewood, Devil's Elbow, Spring Goldenglow, New Mexico Privet, Texas Forsythia. Blooms fuzzy yellow in early spring and is an important early nectar source for butterflies like the hairstreak. Blossoms ripen to dusty grape-like berries that attract birds and small mammals (not edible to people). Tolerates pruning to form a denser, more compact shrub. Heat and drought tolerant.
