AKA, thickhead, redflower ragleaf, or ebolo. This plant is considered an orphan crop - crops which are typically not traded internationally but which can play an important role in regional food security. Widespread in many tropical and subtropical regions, it is especially prominent in tropical Africa. Its fleshy, mucilaginous (succulent) leaves and stems are eaten as a vegetable, and many parts of the plant have medical uses. Plant contains the hepatotoxic and tumorigenic pyrrolizidine alkaloid, jacobine, a toxin meaning the plant needs great caution when using or consuming. However, a study has shown antitumor activity and stimulation of macrophage nitric oxide production. We recommend discussing any use of medicinal herbs with a qualified medical practitioner. Self seeds readily, likes full sun and plenty of water.
