Vernonia baldwinii --Western Ironweed--
Magenta to purple bloom clusters look like fuzzy bursts and attract tons of eager butterflies, summer through late fall. Full sun, deer resistant, 3-6 feet high. Looks best in colonies (fields or meadows) where blooms can make an impression - watch out for aggressive spreading, however.
