3' shrub makes brilliant purple flower spikes with contrasting orange stamens, blooms in summer. Sometimes called Devil's Shoestring for the tough, stringy roots. Sun to part shade, drought tolerant. Native Peoples used the leaves for tea and smoking. Wildly attractive to pollinators and a butterfly larvae host.
