LETTUCE 'Wild' --Lactuca virosa--
Related to L. sativa, regular lettuce, but specifically eaten for its mild painkilling and calming effects. Was occasionally used in place of opium by 19th century physicians, and is sometimes called "Opium Lettuce". Can grow up to 6' tall, leaves flush purple in the sun, and blooms with dandelion style flowers. This is a biennial or tender perennial and will send up pups.
