One of two species (the other being P. cablin) used to produce patchouli essential oil - P. heyneanus is much more rare and somewhat milder in its concentration of the classic aroma. The word comes from the Tamil patchai, meaning 'leaf', called Guanghuoxiang in China where it's been used medicinally since at least the Han dynasty. Antibacterial, antifungal, and insecticidal properties, and an almost magical list of therapeutic effects. Emits an evocative, exotic scent, commonly used in soaps, lotions, perfumes, and aromatherapy. Prefers full to part shade, and is suitable for container, so makes a good houseplant.
