PECAN 'Pawnee' --Carya illinoinensis--
PECAN 'Pawnee' --Carya illinoinensis--
Hardy Pecan cultivar, a large shade tree that bears high quality pecans. 'Pawnee' is a cross of 'Mohawk' and 'Starking Hardy Giant', made in Brownwood, Texas, in 1963, and is very popular throughout the Western and Northern growing regions. Noted for its large nut size and early harvest (usually early September). Once mature (after 8 to 10 years), it is a top producer of medium to large nuts. It has good resistance to aphids and to disease and insects in general. Single pecan trees will produce readily in Austin because there are many trees in all neighborhoods to provide pollen. On the smaller size for a pecan, around 30' high and 25' spread. Full sun and drought tolerant once established.
