A medium to large pine from the mountains of Yunnan and surrounding provinces of southwestern China, usually between 600 to 2600 m (2000 and 8500 ft.), with a dense, broadly conical crown and long, drooping needles. It is very similar and closely related to the Khasi Pine, Pinus kesiya, which is widely distributed from northeastern India to southeast Asia and the Philippines. It produces a very good quality of insect resistant wood and is also tapped for its turpentine. In cultivation it will do well in warm temperate climates in USDA Zones 8 to 10. Seeds benefit from soaking and cold stratification for 60 days after sowing.Cultural RequirementsSun Exposure Full sun from early ageLight shade when youngFrost Tolerance SevereWater Requirements ModerateWind Tolerance ModerateAppearanceGrowth Rate FastGrowth Form Large TreeMedium TreeOrnamental Value BeautifulUsesProperties EvergreenGardening LandscapingOrnamentalAgriculture/Forestry ForestryProducts/Economic ResinWood Insect Resistant WoodLight WoodPale Wood
