PLUM 'Java' --Syzygium cumini--
Incredible fruit tree from Southeast Asia sometimes called Jambu, Jambolan, or Jamun tree, famous for shading the Buddha as he meditated when he was young, and it is said the Jambu fruit is represented in symbols on Lord Krishna's right foot. Mentioned in sacred Hindu texts as the "fruit of the gods". Wonderful as a fast growing shade tree up to 100', can live over 100 years, produces beautiful cream-colored, aromatic blossoms in spring that ripen into edible fruit in the summer. Small plum-sized fruits are sweet-tart and can be made into juice, jelly, sorbet, syrup, wine, or eaten plain, and are a great source of antioxidants, vitamin C, and phytochemicals like beta-carotine, anthocyanin, and lutein. Used in Ayurvedic medicine for diabetes, digestive issues, and as a blood purifier(protecting the liver). Birds and bats love them! The young leaves are pinkish, and are often used in Indian marriage decorations. Leaves and fruit also have anti-inflammatory properties, and there is evidence for cholesterol lowering effects in the fruit. The wood is water-resistant after kiln drying so it is often used for construction in wet conditions. Loves tropical conditions AND is cold hardy once established! We recommend a west or south-facing area for a bit of frost protection when planting in the ground, also suitable for container. This tree has *everything*!
