Sometimes called "iron oak" for the resistance its wood shows to decay, has been used for railroad ties, siding, construction timbers, and other places that need hardy wood. Texas native is drought-tolerant and often used as a barbecue wood. 30-50' tall at maturity, slow-growing and long-lived
