We've found another species of gorgeous sage, the shade-tolerant glabrescens, originating in Japan! This variety is closely related to 'Shi Ho', with larger bi-colored purple flowers, that bloom in greater profusion and last lonnger. Plant and foliage grows more rapidly with greater vigor as well. Blossoms starting in mid-September, terminal clusters of large bi-color purple and light lavender flowers. Clumps enlarge slowly each year, eventually reaching 6' -7' in width (though never really topping about 2' in height). Toothed, arrow-shaped leaves transform from yellowish green to dark green as they age. Likes moist, shady garden spots but can take a bit of morning sun. Variety is hardy when receiving plenty of shade and water as well as soil that is rich and well-drained, especially during winter because of its tuberous roots. Great for containers, shady pathways, or woodland groundcover.
