Ulmus parvifolia --Seiju Elm--
Ulmus parvifolia --Seiju Elm--
This little tree is truly a dwarf elm tree. At 6-8 feet tall mature in ground it can hold that special place in your garden for a unique bonsai specimen plant.
“This is, without a doubt, my FAVORITE non edible tree that we grow, and really that I’ve come across. I’ve been carrying around a twig of it here and there for at least 16 years. I got the original cuttings from the original home of the Bamboo Utility Research Gardens off Tillery, owned by David Cater. The mother tree is no longer but before it died I planted a few in E. Austin. The genetics from these trees are from another commercial planting that David (The Earth Company) did off Comal street. It was the first plant that I tried my hand with, at large scale propagation. After failing on thousands of cuts I finally unlocked its secret. And after all these years I’m stoked to be able to disseminate these guys across central Texas!! In ground they prefer full sun but can be grown in any light scenario like other elms. Once established only supplemental watering is needed in our roughest dry spells. They take central Texas’ coldest temps and can grow in most soil. With only some years the trunk will become corky as if they were decades old. Mature leaves are naturally smaller than a baby’s fingernail, so no need for leaf pruning. One of the most carefree options for in ground bonsai that I have seen! Tight space, miniature plant fan…these guys are a must plant!!”
