SUGAR CANE 'Hardy' --Saccharum arundinaceum--
Really cool huge grass - up to 10x10 feet! Long, gray-green leaves with dramatic pale purple-pink pampas-like plumes 2-3 feet taller in fall. Cold hardy - stays green to 22°, sun to part shade. Used in India for its fibers and stems, to make "Munj fiber" which can endure moisture without rotting. Cloth, cordage, ropes, mats, thatching, small furniture, paper, and dip pens are some of the products. Also used medicinally for a variety of purposes. Youngest leaves can be eaten as a vegetable. Not a sugar source.
