Sometimes called woodbine, this is a vigorous, perennial climber native throughout north America from Mexico to Canada. Strongly adhesive and fast-growing to 100', can rapidly cover an arbor or building facade in lush, thick growth. Since the vine adheres to the surface by disks rather than penetrating roots, it does not harm the masonry but will keep a building cooler by shading the wall surface. Use caution in placing this plant - It spreads quickly and aggressively, can choke out nearby vegetation and damage young trees with heavy growth - considered invasive in many areas because it can be very difficult to limit growth or eradicate where not desired. The sap contains raphide crystals of calcium oxalate which can be irritating to sensitive skin.
