This small perennial herbaceous plant is widely distributed in the understory of humid deciduous forests in northern and southern Europe and the Caucasus mountains. In early spring, before the trees leaf out, it graces vast areas with its broad dark green leaves, adorned with starry white flowers. It has a characteristic, strong, aromatic odor reminiscent of garlic but more refined, and has gained quite a lot of popularity as a vegetable and spice in the kitchen. It is also recognized as a useful plant in traditional medicine and has received some attention in horticulture as a lovely spring ground cover under shrubs and trees.Cultural RequirementsSun Exposure Light shade in dry, hot climatesLight shade in all climatesDeep shade when youngDeep shade in dry, hot climatesDeep shade in all climatesFrost Tolerance ExtremeWater Requirements HighWind Tolerance ModerateAppearanceGrowth Rate ModerateGrowth Form Deciduous PerennialOrnamental Value BeautifulUsesProperties DeciduousFloweringScentHazards InvasiveGardening Ground CoverMass PlantingOrnamentalFood/Medicinal SpiceVegetable
