Also known as Bitter or Pinecone ginger, related to true ginger and with a similar edible and medicinal rhizome. Also wonderful as an ornamental with a dramatic pine-cone shaped buds that produce frilly, white, aromatic blossoms. Termed "shampoo" ginger because the cones make huge quantities of gooey, fragrant liquid that can be used as a soap/shampoo. Cultivated and traded throughout Asia for ten thousand years.
