Grows all over the badlands of South Dakota (and now here!). Burns like other artemisias, though less intensely. Easy-to-grow and not threatened smudging sage! It's important to find wonderful alternative smudges like this one to avoid overharvesting rare plants important to native peoples. Historically used ceremonially by Blackfoot, Lakota, Cheyenne, Okanagan, and Dine groups during sweat ceremonies and for purification. Traditional medicinal uses: tea from leaves for stomach troubles. Tea of roots for laxative, inability to urinate and difficulty in childbirth. Crushed leaf as snuff for sinus attacks, nosebleed and headaches. Strong tea as wash for eczema, deodorant and antiperspirant for underarms and feet.
